Reading BID assists in funding Reading Street Pastors; a charity comprised of a dedicated group of volunteers drawn from local churches who devote their time to supporting the wellbeing and safety of the community. These volunteers undergo specialised training to engage with the public, focusing on identifying and assisting those who may be vulnerable or in need of extra support.
On Friday and Saturday nights, the Street Pastors actively patrol the town, playing a crucial role in maintaining a safe and welcoming atmosphere for everyone. Their duties range from the practical—such as handing out flip-flops to protect tired feet and lollipops to bring comfort—to the essential, like arranging taxis or contacting family members to ensure individuals get home safely. Their presence is a reassuring and stabilizing force in the often-busy nighttime economy.
During the weekdays, Street Pastors continue their invaluable work, patrolling the town centre and engaging with visitors and the local community. They offer a friendly, non-judgmental ear and vital support to those in need, whether it’s the homeless, those experiencing personal crises, or individuals who simply need someone to talk to. In times of tragedy, they also play a sensitive and supportive role, aiding families and communities dealing with the aftermath of any fatalities.
Collaboration is at the heart of this charity. These volunteers work closely with late-night venue door supervisors and services like the First Stop initiative, ensuring seamless communication and effective intervention to maintain safety and security. They contribute significantly to protecting vulnerable individuals and fostering a caring, connected community in Reading.
