Reading BID supports CultureMix to bring Carnival of the World to Reading. This vibrant and immersive event aimed to celebrate cultural diversity while increasing footfall into the town centre, creating a lively and engaging atmosphere for visitors and businesses alike.
In Summer 2022, EKO the Sea Giant, a spectacular four-metre-tall puppet, captivated families and children with a heartwarming story about acceptance and friendship. As part of the performance, EKO walked down Cross Street, interacting with local businesses, staff, and customers along the way. Many members of the community joined the procession, turning the town centre into a hub of energy and excitement.
This festival features a dynamic mix of entertainment each year, including a live music stage and a carnival parade. The event has featured award-winning Reading All Steel Percussion Orchestra (RASPO), dazzling acrobats, fire eaters, dancers, and performers in vivid costumes, drawing inspiration from Caribbean, African, Brazilian, Sri Lankan, and European carnival traditions.
By bringing this unforgettable spectacle to Reading, the BID not only celebrated the town’s rich cultural diversity but also reinforced its commitment to supporting local businesses and creating engaging experiences that attract visitors to the heart of the town.
