The summer season has crept upon us, and thoughts are, once again, turning to the great outdoors. Surely no British summer could be complete without a picnic? We’ve put together our top 10 picnic spots in and around Reading, so whether you prefer a tranquil riverside stop or a country park to make a day of it, all you need to do is pick your favourite (and grab the sarnies).
For picnicking in the heart of the town centre, hop over to Reading’s Victorian pleasure gardens in the heart of the Abbey Quarter – full of history, lovely trees and lots of lawn to spread out on. Located right in the centre of town, you’ve got plenty of options if you forget the sausage rolls – plus choose from a number of family friendly attractions within walking distance, before or after your pitstop.
Located on the north side of the Thames, a short walk from Caversham Bridge, Caversham Court Gardens is a tranquil spot for an alfresco lunch with its lawns running down to the Thames itself.. Boasting history, heritage, gorgeous shady trees and a stunning riverside location, it’s hard to beat for a summertime picnic and Caversham High Street is just a short walk away for provisions.
A riverside town by nature, Reading is perfectly placed for a picnic with a view, sitting directly on the Thames Path. There are plenty of options depending on where you are in Reading – why not visit Thames Valley Park towards Sonning, or Christchurch Meadows near Caversham, within walking distance of the town centre. Walking westward, you can stop beside the newly revamped Rivermead Leisure Centre, with plenty of options should the British weather let you down!
Kids of all ages will be entertained during a picnic at Prospect Park, with a mini steam train (running certain days of the month), sports facilities and play area to keep little ones busy. As Reading’s largest open space, you’ll also benefit from stunning views over the Kennet Valley.
Slightly outside of Reading centre and in our neighbouring Wokingham borough, you’ll find Dinton Pastures Nature Reserve. A huge site complete with dedicated picnic areas, a boating lake, mini golf, adventure playground, two cafes and miles of walking routes, the whole family (and four-legged friends) will be wanting to join your summer picnic.
Greater Reading is home to a number of National Trust properties which offer fantastic family-friendly picnicking opportunities packed with heritage and those all-important facilities. Visit Basildon Park, just 8 miles west of Reading town centre with over 400 acres of parkland. Or slightly further afield you’ll find Grey’s Court and Nuffield House in neighbouring Henley-on-Thames, and The Vyne in Basingstoke.
King’s Meadow on the southern bank of the Thames is a two-minute walk from Reading Station on the banks of the Thames. Lay your picnic blanket down just beyond Thames Lido (great coffee if you need it!) near one of Reading’s Thames Path Mileposts and watch the boats go by. You are also a short walk from Tesco superstore if you need to top up provisions.
There is a lovely green space in the heart of the 12th century abbey ruins for picnics. The ruins of the monks’ dormitory provides lots of grass and shade next to the abbey walls. Just outside the walls there is plenty of grass and benches alongside the River Kennet in a stretch of the river with amazing historical links to King Henry I of England and Oscar Wilde
Just east of the Abbey Ruins along the River Kennet, one of Reading’s greatest picnic spots is riverside square in the Huntley Wharf development. Lots of places to sit by the river and fountains for the kids to run in and out of to keep them entertained.
For a picnic complete with a full family day out, Reading is home to a couple of fantastic family country parks. Visit nearby Beale Park for an outdoor wildlife park within 40 acres set against the River Thames in Berkshire. Or, head to Riseley for Wellington Country Park – boasting over 350 acres of woodlands and plenty of attractions for all the family to enjoy.
