The Stars along the Way (Las Estrellas del Camino) is an outdoor exhibition in which Estrella Galicia pay tribute to the generations that have offered assistance and hospitality to pilgrims who have travelled through their towns and villages along the world-famous Camino de Santiago.
In 2021 and 2022, Estrella Galicia opened outdoor galleries along the French Way and the Portuguese Way of the Camino de Santiago. Now, the six stages of the Camino Ingles from Reading in the UK to Santiago de Compostela in north-west Spain is being celebrated with a new mural of Heather Small in Reading's Friar Street. All together, it makes this the biggest outdoor artistic exhibition at approximately 150 km long.
The UK leg of the Camino Ingles is known as the St James' Way and starts in Reading before heading south to Southampton on the south coast of England.
British painter and mural artist David Speed was invited to deploy all his talent in this new outdoor gallery. Through his works and the force of his unique palette of colours, David immortalises and brings to the fore five different personalities linked to the route such as Heather Small in Reading. Discover through your own eyes how all these stars manage to transmit “that special something”, as they are brought together and immortalised in these large portraits that guide us on the way to Santiago.
About Reading's mural - Heather Small
Heather Small is one of the greatest voices of 90s music. Since she was a young girl, Heather had always been determined to make her own way in the world. Timid by nature, but with nerves of steel, she began her music career with Hot House, a group that released two albums in the late 1980s. She then joined M People, achieving international success and becoming a leading voice and a world famous star. Since then, Heather has also had countless solo hits and her voice has been heard at some of the world’s major events, such as the London 2012 Olympic Games. Regularly appearing on TV, Heather featured in a BBC documentary in which she described her own personal vision of the Camino Ingles/English Way. An experience that changed her outlook and role in life. What drives Heather to continue, to constantly defy her own limits, accept new challenges and shun complacency? “If you felt how I do when I sing, you’d know the answer”, she replies, treating us to one of her incomparable smiles.
