When you think of Reading, independents may not be the first thing that springs to mind. But scratch below the surface, and you’ll find a whole world of indies selling everything from gifts to haircuts, beer to homeware. Small businesses haven’t had it easy over the past few years, so choosing to shop local at one of Reading’s brilliant indies really can make a big difference and help support Reading communities.
Gift shops
If you’re looking to buy someone a gift with a bit of extra thought, head on down to one of Reading’s independent gift shops. But is it art? and RISC World Shop have a wide selection of gifts, books and toys. Over in Harris Arcade, Crunch Comics has a selection of new release and back-issue comic books, collectables and t-shirts.
Bars and pubs
Reading is home to an eclectic mix of independent bars and pubs – you won’t need to stroll far to stumble upon a decent indie watering hole. Siren is Reading’s newest brewery, or visit The Oakford, Blue Collar Corner, Milk Bar or Allied Arms for more indie bevvies. And Reading just wouldn’t be Reading without the famous Purple Turtle.
Cafes
Good coffee is something Reading knows only too well – look past the obvious names and you’ll discover some of the very best indie cafes and coffee houses around. Shed, Picnic, Yaylo and 7 Flowers and Tea are wonderful indie coffee spots with tonnes of character (and the best brews).
Jewellers
Looking for an extra special gift? Reading’s very own family-run jewellers, Jacobs, celebrated 75 years in business in 2023. The independent jewellers on King’s Street offers a wonderful range of jewellery, watches and gifts, boasting its very own onsite workshop.
Hair salons
In need of a pamper? Head to one of Reading’s independent hair and beauty rooms - try Reading Barber or OHMY Hair.
Clothing and accessories
Head to Harris Arcade where you’ll find Reading’s own milliner, visit Stich in Time for your alterations needs, or Simon Dowling Bespoke for some truly independent retail therapy.
Activities
Reading’s indies offer a range of activities to keep everyone entertained. Eclectic Games on Smelly Alley hosts regular games nights. Reading Biscuit Factory is Reading’s very own independent cinema, showing a varied film programme, including the latest independent films, as well as a host of special one-off screenings and events.
Home and lifestyle
If you’re practicing your interior design skills (or just need to buy some new homeware), Reading is home to indie home and lifestyle shops such as Keeley’s Picture framing and Beadle Crome interiors.
Music shops
Home to one of the most well-known rock festivals in the UK, it’s not surprising that Reading knows a thing or two about music. Visit The Sound Machine or Pop Classics, specialist shops buying and selling classic vinyl albums, or head to Hickies which sells, repairs and services many musical instruments.
Food, glorious food
Reading is a foodie’s dream, boasting eateries from every corner of the globe. Check out the famous pie shop, Sweeny & Todd on Castle St, head to the Italian deli, Mama’s Way for some Mediterranean snacks or check out the independently owned fishmongers, Reading Quality Fish or Reading’s town centre bakery Rise Bakehouse. Hop over the river to Caversham where you’ll find True Food Co-op, an independent grocery store selling fresh organic produce and store cupboard essentials.
