A place full-to-the-brim with creative talent, Reading is at the forefront of the media industry. From Kate Winslet and Sam Mendes, to Sir Kenneth Branagh and Marianne Faithful, Reading has long been linked with some of the country’s leading film and TV stars. Not to mention our very own suburb, Cemetery Junction, lending its name to the title of Ricky Gervais’ 2010 film, a nod to his home-town.
Filmed in and around Reading
The Eagle Has Landed - Mapledurham village starred in the 1970's WWII film.
Busgy Malone - Alan Parker's kids gangster film, complete with splurge guns, was filmed in Huntley & Palmer biscuit factory buildings.
Killing Eve - Reading Prison has been used frequently as a film location since it closed in 2013. It doubled as a Russian prison in Season 1 of Killing Eve.
The King's Speech - Englefield House, just west of Reading has been used for many films in recent yerars, including the Colin Firth's hit movie.
Hollywood comes to Reading
The creative sector is one of the UK’s fastest growing areas and the Reading region is emerging as a real hotspot for film, media and creative activity. In November 2021, the brand-new Shinfield Studios at the Thames Valley Science Park opened its doors, bringing Hollywood to Reading!
The new, state-of-the-art film and TV studio complex will help drive Reading’s booming film industry, with a Disney production confirmed to start next year and more facilities opening in phases over the coming two years. The studios border the M4, located just 30 minutes from London and within easy Reach of Reading town centre.
Berkshire Film Office
Led by Berkshire based not-for-profit organisation, Resource Productions, The Berkshire Film Office acts as a film office hub for the six Berkshire authorities, including Reading Borough Council. Offering a range of filming locations across Reading and the wider Berkshire region, from urban settings through to riversides and rural sites.
