South Reading is arguably Reading’s fastest-developing area, with major new housing schemes developed recently at both the Green Park Village and Kennet Island, as well as a new station planned at Green Park for 2022.
Closely linked to the M4, South Reading comprises the suburb of Whitley, home to many of Reading’s residents and a number of good schools. The wider area boasts a wealth of global businesses and HQs, as well as a selection of convenient hotels, retail parks and superstores.
The Museum of English Rural Life (MERL) is found within the wider central boundary, just south of the London Road and near the University of Reading’s London Road Campus. Part of the University, The MERL uses its diverse collections to explore how the skills and experiences of rural people, past and present, help shape our lives, offering a fascinating insight of the local area for budding culture-vultures.
Sport fans will be pleased to find the newly-named Select Car Leasing Stadium (formally known as the Madejski Stadium) within South Reading’s borders. Home to Reading Football Club, it sits just a couple of miles south of Reading’s town centre. A state-of the art multi-sports stadium, it draws thousands of fans from near and far on match days and is easily accessible from the M4 corridor running just below Reading.
Adventure-seekers are also catered for in South Reading, with Reading’s Climbing Centre, Mad House Soft Play and the Lagoona Park activity centre with its freshwater lake, sandy beach and new beach bar all located within its parameters, offering activities to suit every family member.
Burghfield, Grazeley Green, Swallowfield and Spencers Wood are a few of the charming countryside villages which line South Reading’s border and further beyond you’ll find access to larger neighbouring towns Basingstoke (South West) and Farnborough (South East).
